The non-renewable resources are depleting fast and are being replaced by renewable energy, and one such clean source among them is hydrogen. Being a by-product of water, hydrogen is extracted through the process of electrolysis. This clean form of energy can be used for powering several operations, including manufacturing and transportation, among others.
Green hydrogen technology is expected to become a mega-billion worth of technology with its applications across industries. - Oil and Gas: Green hydrogen is one of the gases with an increase in demand from the petroleum refining industry due to its function in different refining processes. During these refining processes, hydrocarbon compounds rich in sulfur are hydrogenated to produce hydrogen sulfide and are treated to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions and remove sulfur to prevent catalyst poisoning.
- Petrochemical: Green hydrogen is used to produce ammonia in the petrochemical sector, which can power household cleaning and fertilize plants. The conventional manufacturing of ammonia (NH3) is a dirty process. But without ammonia, one would not be able to produce food for nearly 60 percent of the world’s population. Ammonia is made from nitrogen and green hydrogen. The petrochemical industry is one of the largest consumers and producers of green hydrogen.
- Electric Vehicles: One of the most promising areas for green hydrogen is the electric vehicle segment. A hydrogen vehicle is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses hydrogen as its primary fuel. Hydrogen vehicles include space rockets, automobiles, and other means of transportation. The size of the hydrogen fuel tank determines the quantity of energy stored onboard.
- Power Generation: The world is currently moving toward green energy, and green hydrogen is one of the power industry’s replacements. Green hydrogen has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of current coal-fired power facilities. Due to the high cost of acquiring green hydrogen, the total cost of green hydrogen-based power will be higher than existing nuclear and petroleum-based electricity.
